With this type of arrangement the flue gases or heating medium flows inside the main shell, with the heated medium flowing inside a tube bundle or annular shell. The impact of radiation heat transfer increases at higher temperatures since it is a function of absolute temperatures to the fourth power. Therefore, radiation recuperators are commonly used where flue gases are in excess of 2000° F.
