History: American Schack Company, Inc., established in Pittsburgh, PA in 1956, was a member of the family-owned international SHG-Schack group of companies, which included the parent organization in Germany and sister companies in England and Japan. The Schack companies have been world leaders in heat transfer and waste heat recovery since 1931.

The Schack family sold the group of companies in 1994, to GEC ALSTHOM. In 1998, GEC ALSTHOM was re-organized as ALSTOM, a publicly traded company.

In 1999 ABB and ALSTOM announced the merger of their power generation businesses in a 50-50 joint company. This was considered a major consolidation in the power generation industry, establishing a massive base for breakthrough R&D, while integrating successful track records in merging cultures. The new ABB ALSTOM Power employed some 54,000 people in more than 100 countries. The company's 1998 pro-forma revenues amounted to about US$ 11 billion.

In May of 2000, ALSTOM acquired the 50% of stock held by ABB in ABB ALSTOM Power, creating ALSTOM Power, a sector fully owned by ALSTOM. The Power Sector has become ALSTOM's main activity in the United States.
